The regular football season is ending in Europe, with all the most-followed national leagues – the
Premier League, the Bundesliga, the Serie A, and LaLiga – playing their final matches and
crowning their champions in a matter of weeks. This, along with the final of the current UEFA
Champions League season marks the end of “big football” in Europe – for a few months. The
end of summer comes with new seasons of Europe’s top leagues, and fall comes with the most
excellent show of them all: the FIFA World Cup.
African players are now employed at football clubs worldwide, allowing us to see them play and
bet on their performance at Betway Zambia throughout the year. But when the World Cup
begins, we’ll finally have a chance to see them play not for a distant club overseas but with their
own countries, alongside their national teams.
But only five African teams have a place in the FIFA World Cup, which means that some of the
top African players won’t have a chance to step on the turf in Qatar this year.
Patson Daka (Zambia)
Although he is only 23, Patson Daka is already on his third overseas contract. From Kafue
Celtic, the team he started playing at in his childhood years, he first left for the Austrian second
league club Liefering, then went to the first league to play for Red Bull Salzburg, currently the
top team in the Austrian Bundesliga. As you might expect, he was soon spotted by a Premier
League club: he is now playing as a forward with Leicester City.
Unfortunately, Zambia did not qualify for the World Cup this year, which means that Daka,
former Zambian Sportsman of the Year, won’t be playing in Qatar.
Naby Keïta (Guinea)
Guinea, unfortunately, dropped out of the FIFA 2022 qualifiers in the group stage, with no
chance of participating in the World Cup this year. This means that Keïta’s fans will have to
make do with him playing in Liverpool’s final matches in the Premier League.
Keïta started playing football in his native Conakry at the age of nine. Soon after coming of age,
he left Guinea for France, starting his European career. He spent two seasons at Red Bull
Salzburg, then played two more at Red Bull Leipzig in the Bundesliga. Finally, he joined the
Reds – he is part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League, the FIFA Club World Cup
and the UEFA Champions League in the last few years.
Victor Osimhen (Nigeria)
The Super Eagles missed out on the FIFA World Cup this year by a thread – Ghana qualified on
away goals after an aggregate 1-1 in the third round. This, unfortunately, means that the fans of
Osimhen won’t see him play in Qatar.
Victor Osimhen is a true success story for Nigerian football. Born and raised in Lagos, he
learned at the Ultimate Strikers Academy before being signed directly by Bundesliga club VfL
Wolfsburg in 2017. From Germany, he went to France, and from there, to Italy – he currently
plays with Serie A club Napoli, and we’ll also likely see him play in the next season of the UEFA
Champions League.
