Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory located near Chicago, Illinois, has an opening for a highly motivated post-doctoral appointee jointly at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) and the Environmental Science Division (EVS). This is a two-year position that we want to fill immediately.
In this role you can expect to:
- To collaborate with a group of scientists working on an ongoing continental scale convection-resolving regional scale climate modeling /downscaling project.
- In particular, this position is for application of WRF and for multi-decadal simulations on the leading high performance computing platforms at ALCF and other Department of Energy computational platforms and conducting analysis of the simulation output for climate extremes.
- Contribute technical expertise through analysis and support for programs and projects associated with HPC and computational problems related to earth system science and other environmental research programs.
Position Requirements
- A completed PhD within the last 0-3 years in geophysical science or related field
- Technical knowledge in using HPC systems for numerical simulations
- Technical knowledge of regional climate models, WRF in particular
- Organizational skills and flexibility in coordinating a broad spectrum of activities
- Knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, process scale models and numerical computation techniques
- Knowledge of using atmospheric observational datasets, data assimilation techniques and statistics
- Familiarity with the use of GPU based systems for computing
- Effective clear, concise writing of technical papers
- Effective communication and interaction abilities with colleagues
- Effective problem solving skills
- Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
