An Internet user asks people in an online forum to name a good place to relocate from America. Their criteria are access to good quality food, proximity to nature, and a vibrant social scene — they aren’t asking for much! Moreover, the catch is they wish to live for under $2,500 per month. Here are the takeaways.
1. Spain
As I live here, I agree with the first contributor, who says, “Spain ticks most, if not all, of the boxes.” Spain is a great choice if you are a digital nomad and can provide your own income. However, you may have to be more creative with your budget to survive by relying on the Spanish job market.
2. Portugal
Spain’s Iberian neighbor is like Europe’s answer to California: hilly, warm, sunny weather and plenty of great surfing beaches. However, like its larger eastern neighbor, Portugal has high unemployment, so bringing outside revenue is always recommended. Any small town in Spain or Portugal,” adds an observer.
3. Italy
Europe continues its trend of affordable living, though much like Spain and Portugal, the cheaper lifestyle is in the provinces. If you go outside of the big centers (i.e., Milano, Rome), you can easily find what you are looking for,” an Italian commenter recommends. “The biggest barriers are language and bureaucracy.”
4. Ireland
“Ireland meets most of those points,” says the next thread member. I think they have a law where beef must be grass-fed.” However, finding accommodation in bigger cities is now difficult due to the housing crisis. “Live on the west coast of Ireland if you don’t mind wind and rain,” someone replies.
5. Slovenia
“Try Slovenia if you’d like to go to Europe for a while,” states another European. “Beautiful, small country, and within your budget.” Who could argue with the wonderful Slovenia, which provides year-round access to bursting nature; plus, this mountainous Balkan nation has some world-class yet affordable mountain sports.
6. The Greek Islands
“Any of the less popular Greek islands, especially the smaller towns,” says a commenter. “Live by the sea, surrounded by mountains, and buy food from locals.” Greece has plenty of affordable real estate, friendly locals, and incredible ocean vistas on every corner — just avoid Santorini to save money.
7. Vietnam
Vietnam is excellent for a young, adventurous, and friendly professional. I worked as an international school teacher for four years in Saigon, making wonderful friends and enjoying a laid-back, fun lifestyle. You can live extremely cheaply if you want — the only drawback is the distance to nature, though it is accessible.
8. Japan
Several people rave about Japan’s rural districts, citing a high living standard and much lower costs than the cities. “Not in the metropolitan areas, of course,” adds a commenter. “The yen is super weak so that you could live in your own house with a car in that price range.” This scenario contrasts with cities like Tokyo, where space is limited and rents are high.
9. Argentina
“Most food is natural; we eat lots of meat and veggies,” comments an Argentinian local. “You can live very comfortably on just $1000.” Argentina is a huge country with only 45 million people, so nature is never far away. Moreover, I have yet to meet an unfriendly Argentinian.
10. Costa Rica
If you find a good place near the beach, in some non-touristy beach or Limón, you will find a place where the rent is cheap, food is also good, and you can find organic products easily,” advises a Costa Rican observer. “You can go surfing or hiking.”
