Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the mercenary Wagner Group chief who led a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin in June, died in a plane crash north of Moscow on Aug. 23. Russian authorities have confirmed his death, citing DNA testing of the bodies recovered from the crash site.
Prigozhin had been listed as a passenger on the plane’s manifest, according to Russia’s aviation agency, but Russia’s emergency services did not immediately confirm whether he had been on board and died.
