The German regulatory agency has greenlit a project by arms manufacturer Rheinmetall to establish a joint venture in Kiev, alongside Ukraine’s defence industry, the state-owned company in the midst of conflict with Russia.
The new enterprise will focus on “maintenance, assembly, production, and development of military vehicles” and will initially operate exclusively within Ukraine, as stated in a press release by the German Federal Cartel Office (Bkarta).
“The defence industry is constantly evolving given the geopolitical situation,” said Andreas Mundt, the president of Bkarta, ensuring that “this project will not result in any competitive overlap in Germany”.
Rheinmetall is known for producing various armoured military equipment, including the Leopard tank, the Puma infantry fighting vehicle, and the armoured personnel carrier Fuchs. Ukraine’s defence industry employs approximately 67,000 individuals and operates under the authority of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers.
