1. Colorado
The beauty of Colorado lies in its flexibility; it doesn’t matter how much income you bring in or what your political beliefs are; countless cities and towns spread across the state can fit your needs! The upside to living in Colorado is obvious: It’s one of the most naturally beautiful states in the nation, and it caters to people who love spending time outdoors. Plus, you can’t argue with its stellar craft beer scene.
2. Virginia
Countless people in Virginia never pass up the opportunity to talk about the benefits of living there! They say Virginia is for lovers — but it seems like people love Virginia itself. “It’s a ‘purple’ state, so it caters to all political leanings,” reveals one Virginia resident. “There are intensely urban and rural areas, so there are many options for where to live. Ocean and mountains too. The cost of living is close to the U.S. median. Best of all worlds, no matter who you are.”
3. Georgia
According to many people, living in Georgia has countless benefits. Georgia is arguably unmatched, from easy access to a world-class international airport to stunning coastal towns like Savannah to some of the best southern hospitality you’ll find in the country. Of course, Atlanta itself has a reputation for being fun and exciting. Sure, it gets unbearably warm in the summer, but it’s a small price to pay for living in such an exciting part of the United States!
4. Michigan
I remember watching American Pie 2 and thinking that Michigan was one of the places I’d love to live. As it turns out, I wasn’t far off in that teenage assessment! “It isn’t perfect, but there’s no place I’d rather live than Michigan,” confesses one woman. “Lots to do, but it doesn’t feel too big or overwhelming. Great camping and outdoor activities. Four seasons. Just all around a good balance of everything that I like.”
5. Rhode Island
By far the smallest state in the U.S., residents confess to loving living in Rhode Island due to the family-focused culture. It’s a dense state by population, but that equates to tight-knit communities where you’ll always feel supported. In addition, Rhode Island’s just a short distance from large cities like Boston, so if residents want excitement, there’s an easy solution!
6. Oregon
The Pacific Northwest offers something no other area in the U.S. can: Unbelievable year-round weather and every type of environment you can think of! According to many people, the benefits of living in Oregon go further than that: “They have free health care, and Portland has a great public transit system,” explains one happy Oregon resident. “The nature is gorgeous, the weather is almost always perfect, and Portland has a lot going on culturally. The minimum wage is relatively high; rent is (by West Coast standards) relatively low. They have beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, and beautiful, swimmable rivers.”
7. North Carolina
I moved to the Tar Heel State in late 2022, and so far, I have been thoroughly impressed by what North Carolina offers! Mountains, beaches, and lakes are all close, and you can’t beat the pristine year-round weather. Like many states on this list, North Carolina boasts a balanced political population, so there shouldn’t be any problem for anyone to find a place where they feel like they can “fit in.”
8. New Mexico
This state has a reputation for being overwhelmingly worker-friendly, so New Mexico is the perfect place to live if you want to save money and enjoy numerous benefits. “New Mexico boasts low house prices, a low cost of living, and low taxes,” reveals one woman. “49% of the state is federal land to walk around. And the state gives 80 hours of New Mexico sick time a year to take whenever — without any penalty from your employer. You just call in sick to your employer.”
9. Montana
I know a handful of people who recently moved from California to Montana, and once I see the views from their houses, I can’t blame them for leaving! It’s a breathtakingly beautiful place to live. “Montana is my favorite state,” admits one man. “It’s politically balanced and has a small, spread out population surrounded by beautiful mountains and lakes.”
10. Maine
Maine is the best bet for anyone looking to live as close to “off the grid” as possible. Tucked away in the northeast corner of the United States, residents of this state have one thing in common: Easy, peaceful living. The prospect of eating authentic Maine lobster on a regular basis is the differentiator that could make me move there in a heartbeat. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way!
11. Massachusetts
For many people, living in a place like Massachusetts is a matter of pride. While the state has famously bad winters, residents love where they live — probably because they can drive like maniacs without any repercussions! (I kid.) “I live in Massachusetts, and it’s a pretty good place to live,” reports one woman. We have the best schools in the country. We have a good mix of cities, small towns, and beautiful woods, not to mention decent job opportunities. The winters here can be rough, but most states have at least one awful season.”
12. South Carolina
As someone who is looking to make a move in the next six to nine months, South Carolina is at the top of my list of potential states to settle down in. Not only is housing increasingly affordable, but many experts predict burgeoning small cities in South Carolina to explode in population, making any housing purchase in 2023 a wise investment for the future. I’m also a sucker for southern hospitality — something South Carolina has in droves.
