A senior Ukrainian military officer, Colonel Roman Chervinsky, has been identified as a key player in the orchestrated bombing of Nord Stream gas pipelines in 2022, according to a joint investigation by the Washington Post and Der Spiegel.
At 48, Chervinsky, decorated for his military service, took on the role of coordinator for the covert operation, strategically managing logistics for a six-person team that executed a meticulously planned attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, vital conduits running from Russia to Germany beneath the Baltic Sea. The audacious assault unfolded on September 26, leaving only one of the four gas links operational as winter approached.
Contrary to assumptions, Chervinsky, a seasoned member of Ukraine’s special operations forces, was not acting in isolation nor was he the mastermind behind the operation. Intelligence sources, choosing to remain anonymous, revealed that he received directives from higher-ranking Ukrainian officials, ultimately reporting to General Valery Zaluzhny, the country’s top military officer.
The ramifications of the attack reverberated across diplomatic corridors, targeting European energy infrastructure and directly impacting Gazprom, the Russian state-owned gas conglomerate with a 51 percent stake, as well as Western companies from Germany, France, and the Netherlands that had invested billions in the joint project. Ukraine’s longstanding concerns about Nord Stream enabling Russia to bypass its pipelines and leading to significant revenue loss for Kyiv were exacerbated by this audacious act.
In a vehement denial of involvement, Chervinsky, represented by legal counsel, dismissed the allegations as baseless.
He said: “All speculations about my involvement in the attack on Nord Stream are being spread by Russian propaganda without any basis.”
The Ukrainian government’s official spokespeople have yet to respond to inquiries surrounding Chervinsky’s role in the covert operation.
