Victoria’s deputy premier says wearing a mask inside is “not that hard to do” after the state government announced students aged eight and over will be expected to wear masks in classrooms.
Jacinta Allan told a press conference this morning the Department of Education’s updated advice was in line with a “strong recommendation” from the health minister for Victorians to consider wearing masks inside.
She reiterated the advice for school students was not a mandate and that “nothing has changed” in the state government’s messaging.
“The information that’s going out to schools today is entirely consistent with the advice that was released last week by the Health Minister [Mary-Anne Thomas] to the broader Victorian community, which had that very strong recommendation to wear masks indoors where you can and where appropriate,” Allan said.

“Schools are doing their bit by reinforcing that message … but also with the provision of ongoing rollout of rapid antigen tests that are being provided in schools.
“Collectively, these set of actions will support students to continue to stay at school and for schools to be open. But also, importantly, it’s about stopping and slowing the spread of this virus.
“Wearing masks indoors is not that hard to do. Particularly, it’s not that hard to do when you’re remembering that you are playing your personal role in supporting our health system.”
