Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy and her counterpart Denmark’s Dan Jørgensen have a huge responsibility to manage discussions on a key part of this year’s climate change conference – the Global Stocktake.
The second week of COP28, currently under way in Dubai, UAE, has kicked off. This means political negotiations will begin. The week before, negotiations were led by technocrats on several areas such as climate, adapting to climate impacts, the just transition and the Global Stocktake, to name a few.
The Global Stocktake is an assessment of the progress countries are making in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. A key goal is to limit global temperature rise to 1.5oC above pre-industrial levels. It will also guide future action for countries to achieve the goal – such as whether to phase out fossil fuels.
