The Russian fleet is no longer dominating in the Black Sea, which could give Ukrainian soldiers an opportunity to drive Vladimir Putin’s troops out of its territorial borders, President Zelensky has said.
In his end of year speech, the Ukrainian leader expressed some positives as the end of the “difficult year” winds down.
Kyiv could be on the brink of a major win, he claimed, due to the withering of Russia’s naval strength.
He said: “Everyone in Ukraine and abroad highly estimates that the Russian fleet is no longer dominating in the Black Sea.
“No longer able to influence upon us, on our decisions, what to export, or any attempts to block Ukraine’s economy. This gives our soldiers an opportunity to stand solid on their ground.”
He added that the deprivation of the Russian fleet could force the Russian occupation to “leave our borders” and the terriroty od the temporarily occupied peninsula.
Zelensky hailed this as a “great work and a great achievement”.
The leader praised his country’s air defence forces, as well as his international partners.
But the looming winter still comes with its challenegs, he warned.
