No matter where you go on holiday, there’s always a chance that you may be in for some less than favorable weather. Even if you’re in the most consistent place in the world, there’s always a chance! And there’s nothing worse than being on vacation for a limited time, a trip that you’ve looked forward to and worked hard for, and having the weather let you down.
Luckily, there are lots of places around the world that have great weather all year round. But, in the same breath, there are other places that are just a bad idea to go to if you’re not in the mood for bad weather.
If you’re planning on traveling within the United States and you really want to enjoy pleasant – or at least predictable – weather, there are some places you should avoid.
Here are the US states with the worst weather.
1. Kansas
The weather in Kansas is described as continental, but the reality is that if you live in Kansas, you’re going to be experiencing serious extremes all year around. The average temperature is about 55 °F (13 °C), but don’t let that fool you. In winter time, Kansas experiences snow, and in the summer, the weather can reach up to about 81 °F. One thing’s for sure – if you’re going to Kansas, you better make sure you know your seasons!
2. Hawaii
You may be surprised to see Hawaii on this list, but let us tell you, it’s here for good reason. Overall, Hawaii is sunny most of the time – hence why it’s known for being the ultimate seaside and beach location! But, there are a few things that you should know about before you book your holidays.
Firstly, Hawaii experiences serious wind in the summer months, and it has also experienced heavy rains as well as volcanic activity. Overall, it’s not the worst place to visit, but you may get unlucky if you’re there at the wrong time.
3. Louisiana
It all depends on what kind of weather you enjoy (as well as what you can’t stand), but Louisiana is known for its incredibly humid summers along with afternoon showers. Sure, the winters tend to be pretty mild – it doesn’t get particularly cold. However, the state is subject to tropical storms, and hurricane season in Louisiana lasts really long – six months from June through November.
4. Oklahoma
Some people describe it as varied, but Oklahoma experiences fairly significant fluctuations in temperature throughout the year. Summers are pretty warm, winters are pretty cold, and spring and autumn are kind of in between. Doesn’t sound too terrible, right? Well, sure, as long as you’re prepared, but unfortunately, that’s not all!
Oklahoma experiences some pretty severe weather, including things like hailstorms and even tornadoes.
5. Texas
This one probably won’t be much of a surprise to most people, but Texas has some pretty gnarly weather. While it’s known by most people as a pretty hot state, it actually also experiences fairly significant natural disasters, although they’re not always too serious. This includes things like seriously hectic heatwaves, as well as tornadoes and hurricanes from time to time as well.
6. Florida
Florida is the beach state, and for good reason – it’s nice and hot during the summer months. But that also means that it experiences serious humidity throughout the year as well, which can make it pretty unpleasant – especially if you’re outdoors or need to be doing physical activity. Florida is also known for thunderstorms and hurricanes during the summertime.
7. California
California may be one of the most extreme states on this list – mostly because it experiences such a vast variety of different weather conditions and events. California is also known for being pretty hot, which is great if you like going to the beach, but along with the heat comes serious wildfires – these have been incredibly devastating in recent years. In addition, California has also been through difficult periods of drought, and heavy rains (along with mudslides), and they’ve even had earthquakes. Californians have seen it all!
8. North Dakota
On the other side of things is North Dakota – a place to go if you’re not a fan of summer and warmth. North Dakota is known for having bitterly cold winters, as well as some really extreme weather – including seriously heavy snowfall and even blizzards.
9. Alaska
Alaska may have been the first state on your mind when thinking about extreme weather in the US, and for good reason. They experience really harsh winters with insanely low temperatures wildly heavy snowfall, and unbelievably long periods of darkness in some regions. The locals may be used to it and they may be prepared, but the weather certainly isn’t anything to joke about!
