Gun laws vary around the world. Some countries allow civilians the freedom to own firearms after going through examinations and other processes for a permit. Other countries refuse the public the right to own a firearm except for military personnel and law enforcement.
Here are ten countries with the strictest gun laws: countries you don’t want to get caught illegally possessing a gun, or you’ll be serving jail time!
1. Singapore
A popular travel destination, Singapore welcomes millions of visitors each year. It has one of the strictest gun laws in the world. Anyone caught illegally owning a gun, let alone ammunition, is faced with a lengthy jail term.
The penalty for any individuals illegally owning ammo in Singapore is five years of jail time. And for any who dare fire a gun, no matter if anyone is injured or not, the penalty can be as strict as the death sentence.
2. United Kingdom
The public may rarely be permitted to carry a gun in a public space. The Prevention of Crime Act 1953 effectively prohibited open or concealed carry in Great Britain. Only those of lawful authority or reasonable excuse are permitted to do so.
Members of the public may own rifles and shotguns under specific licensing, but many handguns have been banned in Great Britain since the 1996 Dunblane school massacre. Handguns are permitted under the legislation of particular locations in Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
3. Japan
Of all the countries in the world, Japan has one of the strictest gun laws. Regarding gun ownership, only the military and police are permitted to purchase a rifle or handgun.
Under strictly adhered conditions, hunters and target shooters may possess an airgun and shotgun. With these special circumstances, the police check for licensed ammunition to ensure there are no pellets or shells unaccounted for.
4. Germany
In Germany, for anyone looking to own a gun, there must be a compelling reason for them to do so, and they must then prove to the authorities that this reason is valid enough to be approved. Any individual over 18 with no criminal history can qualify to own a gun permit as long as other legal requirements are fulfilled. These requirements include the individual requesting the permit to be psychologically sound.
5. Hungary
Hungary is another country noted for having some of the strictest gun laws. Fully automatic firearms, which are capable of firing multiple shots at once with one pull of the trigger, are not permitted for civilian use. This includes any shooting ranges in Hungary.
To be approved, adults with no criminal record can apply for a gun permit but must pass strict regulations, including a physical and mental examination.
6. China
Within China, gun laws restrict ownership of firearms to law enforcement, security personnel, paramilitary, and military. Special permissions are given to hunters, wildlife workers, herdsmen, and shooting competition stadiums. Other than that, civilians are not allowed to own firearms.
7. Australia
Police and military are the only individuals who own firearms in Australia. Mind you, these forces are monitored by the Australian Institute of Criminology. A mass shooting in 1996 resulted in new laws that banned the sale and importation of semi-automatic and automatic shotguns and rifles.
There are exceptions to these rules, with allowances made for firearm licenses for civilians looking to possess or use a firearm.
8. South Korea
South Korea has one of the strictest gun laws, with only authorized personnel permitted to own a firearm. These authorized personnel include security guards, soldiers, and police officers. The permit for which these personnel are allowed to carry firearms must be renewed every three years.
Civilians can apply for a permit to have access to firearms, such as hunters, but they must have no history of drug or mental-related issues. Hunters are also banned from keeping the purchased gun at their homes.
9. North Korea
Out of all the countries in the world, North Korea is notorious for having one of the strictest gun laws by far. The public, which includes businesses and institutions, is banned from possessing or selling firearms. Handguns are illegal for civilians to possess, along with any other gun. This is designated as a strategy to maintain social order in North Korea.
10. Vietnam
Another country with strict gun laws, Vietnam, does not allow civilians to possess firearms of any sort. The only exception is shotguns, which must adhere to restrictive regulations enforced by the country for civilians to possess.
For any of the public who are caught illegally possessing a gun, they are thrown into jail as punishment. How long that jail time lasts varies, but it’s not a punishment anyone wants to suffer.
