The fight between generations is something you would see in War of the Worlds, but the disparity remains between boomers and the younger generation. Boomers have always claimed that the younger generation is the screw-up, but the question remains, are boomers leaving the world in a better or worse place for the younger generations?
1. The Economy
According to the numbers, trickle down economics have obliterated the middle class. This concept was made to benefit the rich and destroy the middle class as we know it. How boomers actually believed that the rich getting richer would lead to more money trickling down on the middle class, still leaves us scratching our heads.
2. Less Entry-Level Jobs
Boomers were living the life when it came to entry-level jobs or jobs in general, and they took over the market and shifted away from entry-level jobs in the 1980s to appeal to younger workers as unpaid professionals. Many young workers and adults needed to make changes in their careers and sacrifice the amount they made to gain more experience. While that seems normal now, boomers could make more money back than having an entry-level position, giving them the advantage of having a higher-paying job.
3. Cuts to Education
Do you ever notice that the younger generations seem to be hanging on by a thread when it comes to living a regular life? The boomer generation slashed essential classes we needed such as Home Economics and many other classes that would teach kids how to function in their day-to-day lives. So if you think that being an adult is challenging, just remember the boomer generation deemed these essential areas as unnecessary.
4. Housing Market Waste
Back then, boomers could easily buy a home for around $90,000, while on average, millennials now are paying around $300,000. With this drastic price increase, it makes it difficult for working families and solo earners to get by, when pairing it with low salaries. Boomers were able to have more homes than other generations, with some being passed down to other family members.
5. Ignoring Discrimination
The boomer generation in particular got to witness Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Had a Dream speech, about all men being created equal and ignoring the rest of his speech which addressed white supremacy. The issue with this is that it’s very close-minded. When someone says “Black Lives Matter” and you respond with “All Lives Matter”, it ignores problems that have been around for decades, which came from the boomer generation.
6. No Increases in Salary
Nationwide, the federal minimum wage still stands at $7.25/per hour, even though some states have begun to make a slight increase recently. Boomers were in control of the job market for decades and decided they were better off pocketing the money than giving a pay increase to workers. Now, millennials make around twenty percent less than boomers did, despite many of them having a college degree.
7. Depletion of Social Security
The amount of boomers led to a depletion of social security benefits, and some predict that that retiree benefits will be extinct by 2034. Many say the only way to save social security is to increase the retirement age in order to make the system healthier again. In other words, work yourselves to the bone so you can receive pennies.
8. Unaffordable College
Ok boomers, you didn’t need to take the lyrics, “We don’t need no education” so literally. College was never meant to be priced at unaffordable prices, but back during the recession of 2001, over the course of seven years, tuition costs increased a whopping fifty percent. Now, many college graduates are burdened with a large amount of student loan debt from high and unfair tuition costs.
9. Slashed Food Regulations
The Food Safety Enhancement Act was the first legislation of the century that began in 1938. Having more affordable food would lead to fewer food regulations and a large amount of food that contained toxic chemicals would make its way into the grocery store. This trend set the pace for food regulations, and now regulations slow everything down only for garbage “food” to hit our shelves.
10. Damage to the Environment
We hate to say it, but the boomer generation is one that didn’t clean up after themselves and just left the mess because it’s no longer their problem. This might be hard for boomers to believe, but your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be on this planet long after you pass. Boomers have never taken climate change seriously which has created environmental damage, some that is beyond repair, but hey, not their problem, right?
