Nayib Bukele, El Salvador’s 42-year-old president who has jokingly called himself the “world’s coolest dictator,” appeared headed for a landslide reelection victory in Sunday’s elections, according to early returns.
With about 22 percent of voting tally sheets tabulated, Bukele had a commanding lead over his nearest rival, leftist Manuel Flores — nearly 1.1 million votes compared with about 94,000. An exit poll by CID Gallup gave Bukele, known for his leather jackets, social media savvy and stunning offensive against the country’s gangs, about 87 percent of the vote.
