Q&A: Financial Coaches Specializing in Serving Athletes (and the Rest of Us)
Three Questions with “Coach Hill”, Hillary Seiler, CFEd®
We asked Portland, Oregon-based financial educator Hillary Seiler (“Coach Hill”) to answer three questions based on her experience working with professional athletes that can be useful for everyone interested in becoming financially fit.
Q: What is a common financial coaching challenge unique to athletes that you frequently encounter when working with your clients? How do you work with them to overcome this challenge?
Hillary: Financial Literacy is a common unknown for most people. Money is an uneven playing field we all step onto. Most of us don’t get any kind of financial literacy education until we hit the real world and have to start dealing with money. The same goes for athletes; the only difference is that they are in the spotlight, so we hear more about their struggles as they navigate their personal finances.
I take a training-based approach to helping everyone I work with handle their personal finances, and that all starts with our 12-week workout program for your finances. These are the fundamentals–the basics of money–and the tools you need to be successful with your finances.
Many of my clients understand fitness programs and how training requires consistency and practice. The same rules apply to money and that is how we overcome the challenges that a lack of financial literacy brings.
Our program allows me to be their financial coach in a self-paced environment via workouts and tutorials, with a go-at-your-own-pace approach for those who may not be ready for one-on-one coaching. This also makes it a perfect fit for those who just want to brush up on the basics of their money game.
Q: How do the coaching services you offer distinguish your firm from other coaches?
Hillary: We work with people from all aspects of life. Our sports and athlete work has given us a unique perspective on how to not only teach but coach our clients. We understand that no matter what your income level, everything starts with the basics to help people really understand their money. Since we truly believe that the athlete mindset can be harnessed by anyone, we use those principles when coaching people on their money game.
Q: For professional athletes preparing to transition into a career earning income off the field (and anyone else going through a major life adjustment) what actions do you recommend they take before they transition and shortly thereafter?
Hillary: Anyone going through a life transition should assess where they are at financially; pro-athletes, military members, young business professionals, and employees transitioning to a new job. It is not specific to athletes because we all go through transitions in life.
When I encounter any of my clients who are going through a transition, I always recommend a financial audit. Where are you at financially; budgeting, savings, debt, and your overall net worth? From there it is about planning and goal-setting to make sure your transition is as seamless as possible. This is typically where one-on-one coaching is incredibly effective and helpful.
