Jason McCartney’s comments
Now this is interesting. GWS list boss Jason McCartney was on Trade Radio earlier today, and was speaking about this year’s draft and players not being willing to leave Victoria.
McCartney is effectively saying the draft pool is smaller for clubs outside of Victoria because draftees are telling interstate clubs they don’t want to leave home, and will seek to return ASAP if drafted. It’s a point of contention in the system, and I’m not sure what the solution is given how many more teams there are in Victoria compared to other states.
If a kid from WA tells clubs he doesn’t want to leave home, he’s cutting out 90% of his potential options. But for a young Victorian, more than half the league remains available.
Is there an answer? Maybe not. Food for thought for now at least.

When can we expect some action?
We won’t be seeing anything made official until 3:00pm AEDT. The AFL has put an embargo on trades being put through today, so everything will need to be done in the 4.5 hours from then until 7:30pm.
It’s a little bit of confected excitement, but we don’t have too much longer to wait. We’ll have to wait and see if anything leaks out before that time though.

Which trades are we looking out for today?
It’s a solid list, and I’m still convinced there are some I’m missing off it. You can also expect to see a few sneaky pick swaps flying around this arvo – although clubs will have another window to trade draft picks in a few weeks, plus they can be exchanged on draft night.
- Josh Dunkley from the Bulldogs to Brisbane
- Ollie Henry from Collingwood to Geelong
- Tom Mitchell from Hawthorn to Collingwood
- Rory Lobb from Fremantle to the Bulldogs
- Lloyd Meek from Fremantle to Hawthorn
- Esava Ratugolea from Geelong to Port Adelaide
- Aaron Francis from Essendon to Sydney
- Sam Weideman from Melbourne to Essendon
- Brayden Fiorini from Gold Coast to Collingwood
- Jaeger O’Meara from Hawthorn to GWS/Fremantle
