An exiled Myanmar beauty queen who had spoken out against her country’s military rulers has arrived in Canada after being stranded at a Thai airport.
Thai immigration officials say Han Lay left Bangkok on Wednesday bound for Canada.
Han Lay’s speech during an international beauty pageant in Bangkok in March last year denounced Myanmar’s military and appealed for international help. She had been staying in Thailand.
She had been stuck at Bangkok’s airport for a week after Thai officials denied her entry on September 21 when she returned from a short trip to Vietnam. They said there were problems with her passport.
Han Lay says she has been charged with treason in Myanmar and fears arrest if she is sent back to her country.
Thailand’s Immigration Bureau told NHK that Han Lay left for Canada with assistance from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Reuters news agency has reported that Han Lay landed in Toronto on Wednesday and quoted her as saying she feels safe.
