Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says the AUKUS deal is a “tremendous achievement” for the Indo-Pacific region but most of the focus has been on France and the submarine fallout.
“I’m still very hesitant to define AUKUS in terms of fallout because while the relationship with France is important and France’s Indo-Pacific strategy is something Australia should welcome … AUKUS itself in my view is a tremendous achievement,” he told Sky News Australia.
Mr Flake said “a lot more attention” should be paid to the fact new Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and India have supported the new alliance and what it means for Australia in the region.
“In the end, AUKUS is an Indo-Pacific deal but we’ve spent most of our time talking about a European reaction,” he said.
