The seasonally adjusted figures for August 2022 were released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Lauren Ford, head of labour statistics at the ABS, said: “With employment increasing by 33,000 people and unemployment by 14,000, the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 3.5 per cent in August, returning to the same rate as June.”
The jobless rate for men rose 0.1 per cent to 3.5 per cent while for women it stayed at 3.4 per cent.
However, the ABS outlined that despite the unemployment rate rising, the workforce participation rate increased to 66.6 per cent and employment to population ratio increased to 64.3 per cent.
Monthly hours worked also increased 0.8 per cent to 1854 million for August.
“The August rise in employment and hours occurred after the winter school holidays and flooding events in New South Wales, where we saw more people than usual working fewer hours in July,” Ford said.
