It looked for all money like 15th seed Jannik Sinner would be joining the exodus of stars at this Australian Open.
The 21-year-old Italian was down two sets to Hungary’s MArton Fucsovics and was in dire trouble before he played some utterly flawless tennis in the next three sets.
After being 6-4, 6-4 down the last three sets were an absolute masterclass to take the match 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.
It is the first time he has come from two sets down to win a match.
Sinner said he needed to change up his game after two sets.
“I had to change something in my game, the final shots I was missing a bit and tactically I was not so good,” Sinner said.
“I think he was playing very well and I had to change a little bit.”
The victory a statement in and of itself that Sinner is ready to contend on the biggest stage.
And it will do him the world of good after suffering through a similar loss to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year.
There it was Sinner who dominated the opening two sets before Djokovic did to him what he just did to Fucsovics.
His likely fourth round opponent… Stefanos Tsitsipas.
