Berlin (dpa / d.de) – The Citizens’ Assembly on Nutrition set up by the Bundestag has presented its proposals to the Bundestag in Berlin. Bundestag President Bärbel Bas said that the parliament would take the recommendations “very seriously”. The non-binding recommendations are now to be discussed in the Bundestag and by expert committees. They include a free lunch for all children at daycare centres and schools, along with a number of measures to promote healthy food.
The Bundestag sets up citizens’ assemblies so as to obtain a direct response from citizens on a specific political issue. Members are selected at random from the entire population by means of a multi-stage lottery process. The results of the Citizens’ Assembly on Transport Policy are expected in mid-February. There have been other nationwide citizens’ assemblies to address issues such as education, AI, research and climate, some of which were set up by ministries.
