Engel-Schmidt revealed that a new committee will be set up to propose women who deserve commemoration in Danish cities. It will be formed of experts who will recognise important and overlooked female figures from Danish history and suggest locations for the new statues.
Actor Betty Nansen and writer Lise Nørgaard are women who have recently been commemorated with statues in Copenhagen and Roskilde.
Engel-Schmidt suggested pastry chef Karen Volf, Nielsine Nielsen, Denmark’s first female physician, and Bodil Begtrup, the country’s first female ambassador, could be given statues.
The 40-year-old minister also put out a call for suggestions on who deserved to be memorialised on social media.
“Will the next generation really grow up in cities with more statues of mythical beasts and horses than of women. No!,” he wrote. “But please help with some input here. Who are we missing and where?”
