José Tavares, who spent 14 years and earned 11 titles with FC Porto as a coach and technical director, has been hired as Charlotte FC MLS Next Pro head coach. |
José Tavares, one of the best developers of soccer talent in Europe, is bringing that experience to Charlotte FC’s MLS Next Pro history.
Tavares, a native of Portugal, will lead the Charlotte side after 14 years and 11 titles with FC Porto, one of Europe’s top development programs. Tavares, 41, has been with FC Porto since 2008, starting as academy head coach, followed by assistant manager of the A and B teams and B team head coach. The B side plays in Liga Portugal 2, that country’s second division.
“I am thrilled to be named Charlotte FC MLS Next Pro team’s inaugural head coach,” Tavares said. “I look forward to diving into the impressive soccer culture built by those at the club over the past few years and continue developing young talent throughout the Carolinas.”
Tavares also has a background with Porto’s youth teams, most recently as Porto B technical director, which can be an asset as Charlotte kicks off its top development side. He’s worked with Porto players like Fábio Vieira, Vitor Ferreira and Fabio Silva who’ve signed with top European clubs while others he helped develop have been acquired for hundreds of millions of dollars via the transfer market.
“It was apparent during the interview process that he possesses a strong methodology and a proven ability to develop young talent,” said Charlotte FC MLS Next Pro President Darrius Barnes. “José’s passion for soccer, positive attitude, and eagerness to become a part of the greater Charlotte community align with our club values and makes him the right person to lead our team in its first season.”
Tavares will work with Charlotte FC academy players starting in the fall, as part of preparation for MLS Next Pro next year.
