Everton have sacked Frank Lampard as manager following a disastrous run of form this season.
The Toffees’ decision to part company with Lampard comes with the club sat 19th in the Premier League on goal difference and just two points from safety, in a season where Everton have won just four games in all competitions and has the second-lowest goal tally in the top-flight.
Across that period, the Toffees have also conceded 35 goals compared to netting just 18 goals across 23 matches in all competitions, underlining how poor their form has been under Lampard after he led them to Premier League survival by just four points at end of last season.
Supporters meanwhile have protested against the club board in recent weeks, which led to board members missing Lampard’s final home game as manager as Everton lost 2-1 to Southampton, with protests continuing in their defeat at West Ham on Saturday (21 January).
Addressing the decision behind Lampard’s departure, Everton released the following statement: “Everyone at Everton would like to thank Frank and his coaching staff for their service during what has been a challenging 12 months.
“Frank and his team’s commitment and dedication have been exemplary throughout their time at the Club, but recent results and the current league position meant this difficult decision had to be taken. We wish Frank and all his backroom team well for their future in the game.
“The Club has started the process to secure a new manager and will provide updates on the appointment in due course.”
Everton also confirmed that Joe Edwards, Paul Clement, Ashley Cole and Chris Jones have also been released from their coaching roles with immediate effect, although Alan Kelly will remain as Goalkeeping Coach.
First-team training meanwhile will be led by Paul Tait and Leighton Baines until a new manager is appointed in due course.
Lampard first arrived at Goodison Park coincidentally on transfer deadline day in January 2022 following Rafael Benitez’s exit two weeks earlier, and now leaves with just 12 wins, 8 draws and 24 losses across 44 matches in all competitions.
Everton will next be in action at home to league leaders, Arsenal, in a 12:30pm GMT kick-off at Goodison Park on Saturday 4 February, live on BT Sport.
