A joint Fish and Game operation has resulted in several sports fishing offences being detected at the Mackenzie hydro canals.
Central South Island Fish and Game compliance coordinator Hamish Stevens said 12 Central South Island and North Canterbury Fish and Game rangers were active at the Mackenzie Basin hydro canal fishery on Saturday and Sunday with a focus on nighttime ranging.
“The canal fishery is one of the most popular trout and salmon fisheries in New Zealand,” he said.
“Licensing and regulations are in place to manage and maintain sustainable fish populations.”

Rangers completed 192 interviews and found six individuals in breach of regulations who were fishing without a sports fishing licence, continuing to fish after taking the daily bag limit, and fishing with more than one rod.
“We hope the result of the ranging operation serves as a reminder that sports fishing regulations and licencing must be adhered to, day or night.”
Stevens said the operation was a success thanks to the help of North Canterbury rangers who came down to join the operation.
“We had intensive coverage in place during the operation and several anglers were checked twice.
“It is important we maintain a ranger presence to catch out those flouting the regulations and to deter any would-be offenders.”
The offenders from the weekend had their fishing rods seized.
All sports fishing offences are criminal offences subject to the Conservation Act 1987.and prosecution can result in the forfeiture of any gear and fish caught.
