Shocking video footage has revealed the moments before a bloody confrontation, during which a police officer was stabbed in the face and a man was shot.
The video, obtained by 9 News, shows police officers approaching a unit in Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point and banging on the door around 11am on Wednesday.
Police attended the unit to execute a search warrant, but were confronted by a knife-wielding neighbour, who can be heard demanding they get off his River Terrace property.
The footage shows police yelling at the man to “drop the knife” before he allegedly lunged at police and stabbed a senior constable in the chin with a 20cm serrated knife.
Police say officers tried to use a taser to subdue the man but the devices were ineffective, leaving a junior officer “no other option” than to shoot the 38-year-old man.
The single shot can be heard ringing out in the video of the incident.
According to police, the officers – including the senior constable who had been stabbed in the face – immediately rendered assistance to the wounded man.
The man was shot in the abdomen and is currently in a stable condition in hospital. Police have revealed the 38-year-old was currently before the court for allegedly stabbing a man in the temple in June last year.
The 43-year-old police officer was treated for non-life threatening injuries to the left side of his jaw at Mater Hospital.
Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the situation could have been a lot worse.
“We could have quite easily had two murdered police today,” he told the Courier-Mail.
The shooting will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command and overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
The terrifying incident comes just a few weeks after a similar situation in Stretton in which a 43-year-old man approached police armed with an “edged weapon”.
The man was shot by police and remains in a stable condition in hospital. He was charged with serious assault of a police officer over the August 21 incident.
On the same day, police also shot a 29-year-old man on the Gold Coast after he allegedly confronted police while brandishing a knife.
According to Queensland Police, it’s the fifth shooting by police this year.
