After completing both Level 3 and 4 study programs, Healthcare Assistant, Rosalie Enriquez, is enjoying putting into practice the skills she has learned, and says her qualifications have given her more responsibility and increased career prospects.
“I decided to enrol in a health and wellbeing course not only for the pay rise, but also to gain higher qualifications and knowledge that would open doors for more opportunities and success.
“My NZTC qualifications have helped me reach my goal in life as a Healthcare Assistant. It has given me knowledge that I can use in my day-to-day interactions with residents, their family and colleagues.
“I am more confident in myself and I’ve recently been appointed and trusted as a unit Home Manager and also as a pill giver.”
Enriquez says thanks to NZTC’s supportive staff, her study journey with the college has been convenient and flexible, allowing her to continue working full-time.
“I chose NZTC because I had heard good things about the college. I made the right decision as it was really the perfect way to study flexibly with an excellent student support program.
“My computer literacy was not great, but through IT help, warm and supportive staff and knowledgeable lecturers, my online study journey was easy and flexible.”
Currently working in Avonlea Dementia Care, Enriquez says caring for vulnerable clients gives her an opportunity to grow and improve as a person.
“Generally, a typical day for me is to fulfill all my duties properly, such as hygiene care, assisting in feeding, helping residents move around safely, all while adhering to the principles of client-centred care.
“Although the nature of the job is challenging at times, at the end of the day you realise just how fulfilling it is, as you give support and help to some of the most vulnerable people.”
A highlight in her work is being able to respect residents’ dignity, privacy and independence.
“The very best thing is when I see, hear and feel that the residents are satisfied and happy with the care, love, concern and support I have given them.
“It’s important to me that they feel heard and well looked after. Words of appreciation from them and their family motivates me to continue to fulfill my job well.”
