Building a competitive NBA roster is about balance as much as anything else.
There are skillsets you can double down on, and skillsets that you can’t. You can contend with one bad defender in your starting lineup. Contending with two is nearly impossible.
By contrast, you can triple down on 3-and-D wings. If they’re also secondary shot creators, that’s even better. With that said, if your two best players fit that description, the conversation changes.
None of which is to say that Kawhi Leonard and Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers can’t co-exist. With that said, this team is not meeting expectations this season.
If they continue to fall short, the Clippers could look to diversify.
Could they do so by sending George to the Miami Heat?
