LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy says he has tested positive for COVID-19. Nagy, who is vaccinated, announced the result during a Zoom call Monday minutes after his usual in-person session was switched. He said from his car he was feeling “pretty good.” Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will run meetings that Nagy can’t conduct virtually. League rules say vaccinated individuals who are asymptomatic can return to the practice facility once they have two consecutive negative PCR tests taken at least 24 hours apart. If they are symptomatic, they need two negative tests taken at least 24 hours apart and must be symptom-free for 48 hours. The Bears had four players on the COVID-19 list as of Monday morning.
TORONTO (AP) — The Chicago Bulls opened a season with four straight wins for the first time since 1996-97, holding off the Toronto Raptors 111-108. DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points against his former team and Zach LaVine had 22 points for the Bulls. Nikola Vucevic scored 17 points and Lonzo Ball had 15 as the Bulls won their fourth straight meeting with Toronto. OG Anunoby scored 22 points to lead the Raptors, who have lost three of four.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks are looking to dig themselves out after an embarrassing 0-5-1 start for a team with playoff aspirations. A summer of optimism has given way to an October that included chants of “Fire Colliton!” during Sunday night’s 6-3 loss to Detroit, referring to coach Jeremy Colliton. The Blackhawks managed just five 5-on-5 goals while being outscored 27-12 in their first six games.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy insisted he understands why his comments about the team’s closeness and unity might ring hollow to those on the outside. Nagy says he “absolutely” understands a 38-3 beatdown by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t exactly scream togetherness. It showed just how wide the gap between the Bears and the reigning Super Bowl champions is. The Bears will try to steady themselves after back-to-back losses to rival Green Bay and the Buccaneers when they host San Francisco this week. But the past two games have been rough.
UNDATED (AP) — Drew Timme of Gonzaga is the lone unanimous selection on The Associated Press preseason All-America team. He was joined by Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn, UCLA guard Johnny Juzang, Villanova point guard Collin Gillespie and Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. Timme was a second-team All-American last season while leading the Zags to the NCAA championship game for the second time. Cockburn looked into leaving for the NBA before returning. Juzang is back after leading the Bruins to the Final Four and Gillespie returns after suffering a knee injury. Jackson-Davis is looking to get the Hoosiers back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs continue to reshape their front office by hiring Houston Astros executive Ehsan Bokhari as assistant general manager. The move comes a week and a half after the Cubs hired Carter Hawkins from Cleveland’s front office as general manager to work under president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer. The 38-year-old Bokhari spent the past three years working in player evaluation for Houston. He oversaw all projects by the team’s research and development group.
