The NBA center was supposed to die. For some time, the working assumption was that the big man would be phased out.
The game was moving towards pace and space. How would slow bigs who couldn’t shoot survive?
Well, a couple of things happened. Firstly, bigs got quicker and learned how to shoot. Even then, it turned out that rim protection would always hold value.
A big who can take away layups and dunk attempts will always give a team an edge.
The Charlotte Hornets are well aware. They selected Mark Williams in the 2022 NBA Draft. The former Duke player has been solid, but if the Hornets want to start winning next year, they may want somebody with more experience.
Somebody like Deandre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns, for example.
