Defender, Ian Maatsen has joined Burnley on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Maatsen began his career within the youth academies of Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam then PSV Eindhoven before he eventually joined Chelsea in 2018, which led to him making his senior debut as a substitute in Chelsea’s 7-1 Third Round victory over Grimsby Town in 2019-20 EFL Cup.
The 20 year-old however has failed to make further appearances for the Blues and spent the last two seasons on loan at Charlton Athletic and Coventry City respectively, in which he scored four goals across 77 appearances in total between both clubs.
Speaking about the opportunity to join Burnley on loan, Maatsen commented: “I’m excited to come here and play for Burnley. It’s a big club and a new challenge which I’m ready for.
“It’s a different town, but a new challenge. I look forward to meeting new people and this season will be good for me.”
The 20 year-old defender also explained what Burnley fans can expect of him this season as he added: “I’m a player that loves football. I’m aggressive and on the front foot. I love to be on the ball and just look forward to playing in front of all the fans.
“I hope they support us all the way through, and we will make it a special season.”
Having played in League One with Charlton then in the Championship with Coventry across the last two seasons, Maatsen believes that this loan move is set to “be more interesting”, as the Clarets return to the second-tier after relegation from the Premier League.
On what he has learned from his time within the English Football League (EFL), Maatsen commented: “There are more games in the Championship [than other leagues] but that’s what you play football for – big games, big crowds, and less training with more games.
“That’s why it’s important for me to get fit, stay fit, and continue playing games at a high level.”
On the prospect of training under a “Premier League legend” and new Burnley manager in Vincent Kompany, Maatsen believes that he will benefit from the Belgian’s knowledge as he explained: “He knows what young players need to go through in their careers, so that’s why I chose to come here and work with him.
“He’s got a lot of experience in the football world. It can’t get much better than having him as a manager for me, I know it’s going to be good.
“It means a lot that he puts trust in young players like me, and I think it will be interesting to have a young team with a lot of fire.”
Kompany added: “We’re pleased to add Ian to our team, he’s a talented, energetic and pacy player, who can defend and get forward well.
“Ian will be a great addition to our team on and off the pitch.”
Maatsen could make his competitive Clarets debut away to Huddersfield in the 2022-23 season-opener live on Sky Sports on Friday 29 July.
