Rahul Gandhi of the leadership of the leading opposition party Indian National Congress (INC) was sentenced to two years in prison
Rahul Gandhi of the leadership of the leading opposition party Indian National Congress (INC) was sentenced to two years in prison. This was announced today by NDTV, quoted by TASS.
A court in the western state of Gujarat has found Indira Gandhi’s grandson guilty in a defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. Gandhi’s defense is expected to appeal the verdict to a higher court.
Meanwhile, the politician will remain free on bail for the next 30 days.
According to the media, the politician asked at a rally in 2019 “why all the thieves have the same last name Modi” – a reference to a scandal related to the then fleeing businessmen, Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi. Gandhi did not name Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the plaintiffs said he “defamed all Modis”.
Fifty-two-year-old Rahul Gandhi hails from the country’s most prominent political clan, the Nehru/Gandhi clan, and is among the leaders of the INC, India’s oldest political force. Its representatives – Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, etc., have ruled the country for most of its independent history. Rahul is the son of Rajiv Gandhi and the grandson of Indira Gandhi.
