ISIS has claimed responsibility for an IED attack in Syria which has left ten people dead and 40 more injured.
On Friday, ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack on Syria’s Sayeda Zeinab shrine, located south of Damascus.
According to a post on its Telegram channel, the attack killed multiple people and injured many more.
The terrorist group also claimed responsibility for a similar attack at the same shrine earlier in the week, which injured two people. The shrine is currently seeing a large number of visitors as Shia Muslims assemble to observe the Ashura mourning period.
On Thursday, a motorbike equipped with explosives exploded in a Damascus suburb near a Shiite Muslim shrine, according to state television.
The horrific occurrence happened a day before the solemn holy day of Ashoura, and it resulted in at least six deaths and several injuries, with dozens of people injured.
Syrian Health Minister Hassan al-Ghabash claimed that 26 of the injured were being treated at various hospitals, while 20 others were given on-site or discharged care.
Authorities initially said that the bomb was concealed in a taxi, but later clarified that the explosives were on a motorbike that exploded adjacent to the cab.
Photographs circulated by pro-government media showed a burnt cab surrounded by large people, with individuals dressed in military uniforms present.
The area was festooned with Ashoura flags and banners. Videos circulating on social media showed individuals carrying two bloodied and dust-covered men in search of help.
The bomb shattered the glass façade of surrounding businesses, setting one on fire.
The Sayida Zeinab neighbourhood takes its name from the mausoleum of Sayida Zeinab, the Prophet Muhammad’s granddaughter.
During the early stages of the conflict, which grew from an anti-government rebellion into a sectarian civil war, it became a symbolic rallying point for Shiite fighters supporting Assad.
