CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Thousands of people in one county in an Eastern Carolina county were left without power on New Year’s Eve.
Both the Duke Energy outage map and the Carteret Craven Electric Co-op outage map showed thousands of customers without power.
The two companies provide electric power for 79,537 customers in Carteret County according to Poweroutages.us. Carteret-Craven Electric Coop supports 52,938 people and Duke Energy supports 26,599 customers.
Carteret Craven Electric Co-op said in a Facebook post, there’s a broken insulator on the transmission line along Bogue Banks, and as of 10:34 p.m. has 7,782 customers without power. According to the CCEC website, 4,097 of those are in Emerald Isle and 3,684 are in Pine Knoll Shores.
Duke Energy’s outage map showed 9,665 customers experienced power outages in Carteret County between Atlantic Beach and Morehead City around 9:30 p.m. and stated the outages were caused by damage to major power lines.
According to the map, at 9:45 p.m. outages dropped to just over 1,000. It’s estimated that power will be restored by 1:45 a.m. New Year’s morning. At 10:33 p.m., only one active outage was showing.
