Job description
We are seeking to appoint a candidate with an excellent research record to a permanent Lectureship in the Mathematics of Environmental Data Science (equivalent to North American assistant professorship). Applications are welcome from candidates working in any area of mathematics for environmental data science, including data assimilation and deep learning. The post is a joint position between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. It is a full-time position, but flexible working arrangements can be considered.
You will have:
• A PhD in Mathematics or in a quantitative science, or equivalent research experience;
• An excellent track record of research in an area related to the mathematics of environmental data science, evidenced by publications of international standing;
• Ability to teach across a range of modules and levels in mathematics;
• Dedication to high-quality teaching and learning.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers students a vibrant teaching and learning environment coupled with world-leading research in applied and numerical mathematics, pure mathematics and statistics. The Department of Meteorology is a thriving community of over 200 academics and research scientists and more than 150 students. It also hosts some staff of the UK Met Office, the NERC National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) and the NERC National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO). Along with the Department of Computer Science, the two departments form part of the School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences. A core part of the School is the Data Assimilation Research Centre (DARC), involving 8 academic staff and around 20 research staff and students crossing the different departments. DARC has a strong research record in data assimilation theory and applications, collaborating with scientists in operational centres such as the Met Office and ECMWF, as well as with NCEO and other academic groups. The co-directors of DARC are Prof Sarah Dance and Prof Amos Lawless, who are also co-directors of the Data Assimilation Division of NCEO.
