During the 59th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium, President William Ruto conferred over 400 Kenyans with various state honours for the distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities.
Among the awardees include Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Second-lady Dorcas Gachagua and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati who received state commendations.
Others were military personnel, members of the judiciary and civilians who received awards of orders, medals and decorations.
But after the exercise, outspoken Narok senator Ledama Olekina came out guns blazing saying his name was ‘unfairly’ struck out from the list of Kenyans set to receive state honours.
“I never knew that people can be very petty. Recently, I was nominated to receive honours as the Chief of the Burning Spear because of my work, and my position in parliament by the joint secretariat,” Ledama said.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Tuesday, December 13, Ledama linked the Bomas of Kenya incident during the official declaration of the 2022 presidential results to the move.
“But because of the incident at Bomas of Kenya, a petition was engineered and my name was removed from the list by the Kenya Kwanza team led by Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula,” he added.

Ledama claimed that Wetang’ula sat in the joint secretariat and said that the senator caused mayhem so he should not be honoured.
“So, it beats the question, other people like the president have previously been taken to the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague and are an Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH). In 2007, President William Ruto asked the same question I am asking today, because of being so petty and letting power get into your head, you now say that you cannot honour me,” he explained.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker wondered why everyone else who has gotten into his position as a deputy whip had been honoured.
He further faulted the joint secretariat saying that they were not right to deny him the honour.
“First of all, everyone saw what happened at Bomas, I never caused violence. So, for you to go out there and bring a petition and then drop my name without offering me a right of reply was unfair,” he added.
