Australia started the third Test strongly, but will need to continue to bat well on a raging turner of a pitch in order to press home its advantage.
Key events
1st over – Mitch Starc to open the bowling
By Simon Smale
FOUR! Rohit Sharma clips the ball off his pads for a boundary first up. It was a poor line but there was a bit of swing there, which is promising.
Again down the leg side, this time Rohit can’t make contact but, again, there is some swing there too.
Two slips, Starc straightens up his line, the swing brings the ball in a touch and Rohit takes a single to square leg.
The tail has been well and truly docked
By Simon Smale
what happened to our batting tail? Lately it seems like our tail is 6-out, all-out…
– Steph in Melbourne
Wowzers is right…
By Simon Smale
That was a calamity
By Simon Smale
Was that a calamity? It sure looked like one.
– Mike
I think we can call that a calamity.
Batting is going to be tough
By Simon Smale
How much damage can the aussies do before parity?
– Bo Sweep
When they’re in, the batters still need to have supreme concentration.
But if Australia can expose a couple early on, this could all collapse pretty quickly.
This little 10-15 minutes before lunch will be very tough for India.
Khawaja’s 60 worth its weight in gold
By Simon Smale
How good does Khawaja’s 60 look in both Ist Innings scorecards?
– Phil
Almost double what the next highest run scorer (Marnus Labuschagne with 31) managed.
It’s a terrific innings.
Australia were more steady in this match
By Simon Smale
That patience was serving them well too, but it’s all gone wrong pretty quickly to end.
Australia all out 197, lead by 88
By Simon Smale
Key Event
The last six wickets earned Australia 11 runs.
I mean, I know the pitch is bad but even the Isle of Man would be upset with that.
It took just 34 balls and 29 minutes.
Starting at 10:38am local time, Australia were bowled out by 11:07am.
Australia’s lead of 88 will be huge, vital, in fact. But there was a real chance for that to have been a whole lot more.
BOWLED HIM!
By Simon Smale
Key Event
Lyon reverts to type and goes for the big heave sweep and is bowled.
Well that happened quickly, didn’t it?
77th over – Ashwin will look to wrap things up
By Simon Smale
Lyon waits back in his crease and defends.
Lyon defends the next one back down the pitch.
76th over – Yadav has three more
By Simon Smale
Matt Kuhnemann is the last man in.
Five wickets in 28 balls. I mean, in terms of collapses, that’s gotta be up there with one of the best.
Kuhenmann leaves the first he faces outside off, was there a little lightsaber style leave there? Marnus-style defensive batting from his fellow Queenslander.
Another cagily flamboyant leave from Kuhemann, like he’s trying the full swish but doesn’t quite have the full conviction to do it.
Down the leg side to end the over.
BOWLED HIM!
By Simon Smale
Key Event
Well there you go! Right through the defences of Todd Murphy!
Goodness me we’re witnessing a massacre here.
Murphy lasts just six balls before heading back to the sheds with a loud quacking sound and Australia are on the verge of being bowled out – barely quarter of an hour after looking good to push their lead above 100.
76th over – Here’s Yadav again
By Simon Smale
Lyon drives nicely but into the pitch, the ball popping up and not really going off the square. Nice stroke for no run.
Yadav appeals but that was going a long way down leg side.
There is some reverse swing, not huge amounts but just enough – especially against tailenders.
75th over – Ashwin still has five balls in this over
By Simon Smale
Todd Murphy is the new sacrificial lamb to be slaughtered on the altar of spin.
Three close catchers on the off side, two slips and a silly point.
A bit of a lofted defence shot back to Ashwin, the ball falling just short of a caught and bowled chance.
Murphy defends, and again, and then flashes a drive into the covers where it is fielded.
BEATEN! The last ball turns sharply outside off and beats the outside edge.
LBW! ALEX CAREY IS OUT!
By Simon Smale
Key Event
That looked absolutely plumb live, but Carey has reviewed more in hope than expectation I’d think.
That should be at least clipping the stumps – but is probably gunna hit leg about half way up.
Yep, that’s very, very out.
Carey doesn’t last long, he goes for 3 off 7.
India have four wickets in the last 20 balls.
Australia 8-196.
75th over – Ashwin continues
By Simon Smale
74th over – Still three balls to come from Yadav
By Simon Smale
Yadav was bowling around the wicket to Starc, to Lyon he’s back over and the Australian off spinner defends solidly.
FOUR! Inside edge past the diving wicketkeeper to ultra fine leg for a boundary. My word, that’s missed castling Lyon by the width of a bail.
Some wobble on that delivery as it careered down the pitch at 134kph, Lyon defends it solidly though.
BOWLED HIM! STARC IS BEATEN BY A STRAIGHT ONE!
By Simon Smale
Key Event
Off stump is still cartwheeling towards the boundary – a comprehensive shattering of Starc’s defences as Yadav gets the ball to hold its line and beat the tentative defence.
Things move quickly in India and when the pack of cards starts collapsing, there’s not much any one can do to stop it.
Australia in danger of collapsing in a heap before lunch here.
74th over – Umesh Yadav, the wicket taker, continues
By Simon Smale
Carey mistimes a drive and that gets the bottom edge and bounces up and raps him on the knuckles as if to admonish the rash shot with the ball pitching into the rough.
Carey guides the ball to short third man and takes a single.
73rd over – Ashwin with his tail up, continues
By Simon Smale
A SWEEP! Oh lordy, Carey’s first ball is swept nicely away for a single to backward square leg.
Starc on strike, two slips and a silly point wait. Oh that’s beautiful drift but Starc is equal to it and he pushes away for a single to extra cover.
Carey defends back down the pitch.
Carey waits back in his crease and has to adjust quickly to the turn towards off, jabbing the bat down awkwardly.
Off the inside edge and there was a bit of pad but they scamper through for a single to short square leg.
BEATEN! Lovely ball from Ashwin, drifting in, Starc comes forward to the line of the pitch and the ball turns away and beats the edge. A peach of a ball to end the over.
