French President Emmanuel Macron delivered his traditional New Year’s Eve message from the Élysée Palace in Paris on Sunday after a year that saw widespread protests against his government’s pension reform and the recent passage of an immigration bill endorsed by the far right. Macron’s address also comes less than seven months before the 2024 Olympic Games open in the French capital.

Macron said that 2023 was marked by wars in “Ukraine, the Middle East, and Gaza”, and said that 41 French citizens were killed and others taken hostage in the October 7 “terrorist attacks in Israel”.
“We are not forgetting [the hostages],” he said.
Macron also said that 2024 would be “a year of determination” for France, and cited the upcoming European Parliament elections as an opportunity for French voters to “continue the European tradition, or to stop it”.
