Part of one of Auckland’s busiest cycleways has been closed due to safety concerns.
Waka Kotahi closed the underpass at Te Atatū on the northwestern cycleway on Monday morning, after maintenance workers raised concerns about structural issues in the cycle tunnel.
“Our contractors were installing new lights in the underpass and raised some concerns about the structural integrity of the underpass,” Auckland Transport, which shares responsibility for the cycleway with Waka Kotahi, said.
Stuff has sought details from Waka Kotahi, which is responsible for the works.
Cyclists on Monday morning were posting on social media saying they were angry to find the important link on the cycleway fenced off.
They said there was no proper signs or information about the reasons for the closure or how they could continue their journeys.
