LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – After claiming victory in two non-conference road matches earlier in the week, the University of Mobile Women’s Soccer team wrapped up their long five-match road trip on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a non-conference bout with No. 19 Georgia Gwinnett College. The Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett entered Saturday afternoon’s match as the heavily favored team to win with a 2-0-4 overall record, but Mobile showed GGC and the rest of the NAIA that they could be a surprise team this season after finishing Saturday’s match in a 1-1 draw.
Recap
Georgia Gwinnett managed to hit the scoreboard first early in the match in the sixth minute. From there, the Grizzlies were held scoreless for the remaining 84 minutes. With the score in favor of GGC 1-0 at halftime, Mobile’s Sophie Roberts scored the equalizer in the second half after going one-on-one with the Georgia Gwinnett goalkeeper. The equalizing goal from Roberts came in 56th minute and is Roberts’ seventh goal scored in three matches played this week. In addition to her seven goals, Roberts added two assists earlier in the week, giving her a total of 16 points earned from Sept. 5-10. She is now the front runner for the SSAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honor, and could very well be in the running for the NAIA National Women’s Soccer Player of the Week.
Roberts’ goal tied the match at one goal a piece and the score held from there. The Grizzlies out-shot the Rams 15-6, with four shots being on-goal. Mobile goalkeeper Juliana Gomez played all 90 minutes and picked up three saves. Freshman Raegan Latiolais led the Rams with three shots taken in the match.
Headed Home to the Jungle
After Mobile’s impressive 1-1 draw with the 19th-ranked team in the country, the Rams’ overall record moved to 3-2-2 on the season. Mobile will return home next week with a non-conference match against Florida College, a former member of the SSAC.
Next week’s match against Florida College was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, but has been moved to Friday, Sept. 16 due to travel concerns for Florida College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.
