You’ll be hearing all the news circulating today on a new ruling coming in from the Premier League after clubs took a vote on it.
I’ve seen a lot of ‘big blow’ for Chelsea reports since this news came out, but I actually don’t think it’s a big blow at all.
Premier League clubs have voted in favour of limiting amortisation of new contracts to maximum of 5 years. Deals can still be longer but amortisation can’t.
This means that Chelsea, having previously signed players on long contracts so they can amortise the fee and avoid FFP rules with a clever loophole, will no longer be able to do that in an amortisation sense at least.
Personally, for what Chelsea need right now, the here and the now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all. It means that perhaps we might just look for players on shorter contracts to give what this squad needs now, proven leaders rather than players for the future.
Chelsea’s squad is super talented and has some very good prospects, but these players are raw and there is no guarantee that they will make it at Chelsea. Some will, some will not.
Mauricio Pochettino needs more experience and leadership in this squad, so I am hoping that this might force us to change our tact ever so slightly in the January transfer window at least and bring in say an Ivan Toney, who I think ticks all the boxes to what we need right now.
Chelsea need more players who can make an instant impact and come in and make the difference now, so hopefully this means we wont be so strict on age groups that we are looking at targeting.
