Nottingham Forest have signed Wayne Hennessey on a permanent transfer from Burnley on a two-year contract until June 2024.
Hennessey began his career at Wolves where he graduated through their youth academy and proceed to make 166 appearances, amidst loan stints at Bristol City, Stockport County and Yeovil Town.
A 132 appearance spell at Crystal Palace followed between January 2014 – May 2021 before Hennessey moved to Burnley last season, where he only made three appearances of which all came away from Turf Moor against Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester United respectively.
Burnley have consequently decided to release Hennessey on a free transfer to Forest as the newly promoted Premier League club look add competition for loan signing, Dean Henderson.
Speaking about his move to Forest – having previously played against them throughout his career – Hennessey said: “I’ve come up against Forest a lot in the past and it’s a fantastic club. There’s a great fanbase and the atmosphere at The City Ground is up there with the best in the game.
“It’ll be a different level now that we’re back in the Premier League.”
“I have also played with and against a few of the Forest players. It’s a very exciting time to come on board and I can’t wait to get involved and start training here at the Nigel Doughty Academy.”
Hennessey also issued the following message to Burnley supporters following his departure after the club were relegated at end of last season to the Championship: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Burnley Football Club for the past 12 months.
“The players, the staff and the supporters, who stood by us every week and every game, thank you so much to you all.
“My time was only brief at Turf Moor and it didn’t end how we would have hoped, but I loved being a part of this special Club and it will always hold a place in my heart.
“Good luck for the new season and pushing back to getting where you belong. #UTC”
“Wayne is an excellent goalkeeper who has proven himself at the highest level over many years,” commented Forest Head Coach, Steve Cooper as he praised the 35 year-old for his “wealth of Premier League experience” at club level as well as internationally for Wales.
Cooper also noted the impact that Hennessey will bring to the squad as he added: “However, Wayne is also a great character and he is a very strong addition to the Nottingham Forest dressing room.”
Hennessey could make his debut for Forest in a friendly away to Barnsley at Oakwell tomorrow (16 July), with his competitive debut potentially set for Saturday 6 August at Newcastle as Forest begin their first Premier League campaign since 1998-99 season.
