Elena Rybakina might have won the Wimbledon title but there was no doubt on won the hearts of those in attendance.
While Ons Jabeur fell short at the final hurdle in her quest to grab a slice of tennis history to become the first Arab/African player to win a grand slam title, her personality and class attracted much praise from the tennis world.
As Jabeur approached the microphone after receiving her runner-up trophy from the Duchess of Cambridge, the crowd erupted into applause and rose to their feet.
“I love this tournament, I feel really sad but it’s tennis there is only one winner. I’m really happy I’m trying to inspire many generations from my country … I hope they’re listening.
“I also want to thank this beautiful crowd for their support during the two-weeks, it’s been amazing thank you very much.”
When told she’ll be back at the All England Club to claim her maiden title, Jabeur took a cheeky dig at Rybakina.
“I mean Elena stole my title but it’s OK,” she said as the crowd erupted into laughter.
Jabeur joked that she would have to teach the new champion how to celebrate such a momentous occasion, after the Russian-born star’s low key antics were left to a routine handshake at the net.
“Maybe one day you will see huge reaction from me,” she said with a smile, but unfortunately not today.”
As Jabeur left the court, she made her way down the stairs with the runner-up trophy in hand to a huge applause from the crowd.
Jabeaur spent time taking selfies and signing autographs for the fans, before waving to the crowd as she left arena.
