NRL stars Jack Wighton and Latrell Mitchell have pleaded not guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court after they were charged over a fight on a night out in Canberra earlier this month.
Key points:
- Jack Wighton and Latrell Mitchell were charged over a fight at a nightclub on February 5
- The pair claimed the fight was “harmless” in a joint statement
- They both pleaded not guilty and the case will return to court in October
Canberra Raiders’ player Wighton is charged with fighting in a public place and failing to comply with an exclusion direction, while Mitchell is charged with fighting in a public place, affray, and resisting a public official.
Lawyers for the pair entered not guilty pleas on behalf of both the men and sought dates for a hearing.
The pair were arrested on Bunda Street in Canberra’s CBD at 3:45am on February 5, following Wighton’s 30th birthday celebrations.
The NRL later confirmed the incident — described by the players as “harmless” — would not rule either player out of up-coming games.
The alleged offences do not meet the threshold of the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy.
Both players have apologised for the “embarrassing” skirmish.
“We wanted to express remorse for putting ourselves in the position to embarrass our clubs and the NRL over the weekend,” they said in a joint statement.
“While everyone enjoyed a great night, we understand that our wrestle, as harmless as we believed it to be, was a poor decision and may have looked bad.
“We are sorry for this, and know that we need to be better when in public.”
In court today, Magistrate James Stewart removed their bail requirement to report to police.
The case will return to court after the NRL season in October.
