Buddy Hield made history at the tip-off of a Thursday evening match between the Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers. During the jump ball, hield received the tip from Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen and swiftly turned around to shoot, making the basket in one smooth motion.
Hield’s shot is the first time since 1996-97 (when tracking began) that someone made a 3-pointer in the first 3 seconds of an NBA game.
Two days ago, while Buddy Hield was warming up for the Pacers’ match against the Atlanta Hawks, Tyrese Haliburton’s dad, John, came through the pregame tunnel and repetitively advised Hield to shoot more often.
“I’ve been telling everybody about this,” John Haliburton exclaimed to Hield. “‘Tell Buddy this for me. Tell him Tyrese’s dad said to see me if anything come wrong.’ Shoot the ball. Stop Dribbling. I don’t need for you to dribble. Just shoot the ball, please?”
Buddy Hield laughed and responded with, “I got you.” In the next game, Hield applied John’s advice to make the fastest 3-pointer in an NBA game.
More recently, then-Oklahoma City player André Roberson made a basket early in a match back in 2015. Roberson made a layup 4 seconds into a game against the Spurs. Much like Hield, Roberson received a high jump ball after a tip from Steven Adams. In one motion, Roberson threw up a one-handed layup 4 seconds into the game.
Nicholas Batum did something similar to Roberson that same year in a match against the Hawks. Except Batum was fouled on his layup attempt for the and-1 basket.
Roberson and Batum made their shots very early into the game. However, both of their baskets were 2-point field goals, crowning Buddy Hield the title as the fastest 3-point shot made in NBA history.
Buddy Hield is an accurate shooter shooting an impressive 41.9 percent this season. Hield is averaging 17.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game 35 games into his 2nd year with the Pacers, who currently sit at the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.
