Blues legend Andrew Johns believes Parramatta does not have the playing roster capable of winning the competition.
Speaking on Wide World of Sports’ Freddy and the Eighth, Johns said coach Brad Arthur has got the best out of the club’s current roster, but ultimately the players aren’t good enough to win a comp.
“I think it’s a squad that can come sixth to fourth or third,” he said. “I just don’t know if it’s a squad that can win four big games on the trot.”
He did however say they were “very close”.
Reed Mahoney and Isaiah Papali’i are among a stack of Eels – many of them forwards – leaving the club at season’s end.
Brad Fittler said of the nine errors made by the Eels last weekend against the Warriors, all were made by the backs, of which all bar one have already re-signed with the club.
He said while Brad Arthur was still the man for the job, there were few other options the club could explore.
“Who do you put in there? Are you going to go with a young young bloke, or are they going to bring in a more experienced coach?
“It’s no good getting rid of the coach unless you can find a better coach to do the job.”
The Eels will take on the Broncos at CommBank Stadium tonight. Kickoff is at 7.50pm. The Eels have won their last matches against the Broncos.
