Rebecca Burns made 40 off 28 balls for the Wellington Blaze in their win over the Canterbury Magicians.
At Hagley Oval, Christchurch: Wellington Blaze 146 all out in 20 overs (Rebecca Burns 40 off 28, Melie Kerr 38 off 35; Missy Banks 3-21 off 4, Amy Satterthwaite 2-28 off 4, Sarah Asmussen 2-31 off 4) beat the Canterbury Magicians 135-7 (Kate Anderson 83 off 63; Maneka Singh 2-18 off 3, Sophie Devine 2-24 off 4) by 11 runs
Rebecca Burns led the way as the Wellington Blaze posted an insurmountable total of 146 against the Canterbury Magicians on New Year’s Day on Sunday.
The newly-capped White Fern made 40 off 28 balls and shared in a partnership of 55 off 44 for the second wicket with Melie Kerr, who made 38 off 35.
Even though the Blaze were dismissed by the Magicians, their total still looked imposing, and while Kate Anderson played an impressive lone hand for the home team at Hagley Oval, making 83 off 62, they ultimately lost by 11 runs.
Melie Kerr took the key wicket of Amy Satterthwaite, getting her caught by Georgia Plimmer for 11 off 13, and finished with 1-30 from her four overs.
The Magicians had a late rally when Lea Tahuhu came to the crease and hit 16 off 11, but with 22 needed off 10 deliveries, Sophie Devine had her caught in the deep by Maddy Green.
Devine finished with 2-24 from her four overs, while Maneka Singh took 2-13 off three.
For the Magicians, seamer Missy Banks took 3-21 and spinners Satterthwaite and Sarah Asmussen each picked up braces, taking 2-28 and 2-31 respectively.
The big moment
Two balls before the halfway mark, it was captain against captain as Melie Kerr stood at the bowling crease with Satterthwaite down the other end. In the end, the apprentice conquered the master, getting her to offer up a catch on the off-side off a wrong ‘un.
Best with the bat
She might have ended up on the losing team, but Anderson stood head and shoulders above everyone else, finishing unbeaten on 83 off 62. She just needed one of her side’s other batters to stick with her, but none of them could.
Best with the ball
Maneka Singh bowled all three of her overs for the Blaze inside the power play and took two early wickets, which helped put the Magicians on the back foot early.
The big picture
The Blaze picked up their third win from three matches and move on to host the Northern Brave on Wednesday, while the Magicians lost for the first time in three outings and now have a week to wait before travelling to Auckland to play the Hearts on Sunday.
