A short and sweet pancake recipe. Pancakes are such a staple breakfast for me and these red velvet ones just makes the normal everyday breakfast pancakes just abit more interesting.

It takes the normal pancake recipe and method, adds a little cocoa powder and some red color. Not forgetting, a bit of acidity from the buttermilk or the buttermilk alternative.
Ingredients
Cocoa powder
Red velvet cakes, pancakes or cookies are made with cocoa powder and buttermilk. The chemical reaction between these ingredients (the acid in the buttermilk) and these help give them a deep maroon color. Additionally, the food color is used to enhance the red color further.
Buttermilk
An easy and more available alternative of buttermilk is adding a tablespoon of vinegar/lemon juice to milk.
Red food Color
For this, you can use either liquid, gel or powder red food color. Depending on the type of color, you might need to add more or less.
Red Velvet Pancakes
Short and sweet!
Servings: 2
Ingredients
- 2 cups All purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons Baking Powder
- 2 Eggs
- 2 cups Milk
- 2 tablespoons Vinegar/lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons Cocoa Powder
- 2 teaspoons liquid Red food color Alternative, 1 tablespoon of powder food color
- 4-5 tablespoons Sugar
- 1 pinch Salt
- 1/2 cup Chocolate sauce For garnish
- 1/2 cup Strawberries For Garnish
Instructions
-
Combine together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa powder and salt
-
Add the vinegar or lemon juice into the milk to get a buttermilk substitute.
-
Combine the wet ingredients: Eggs, red food color and milk
-
Mix the wet and dry ingredients until you get a moist batter. You might have some lumps and that is fine.
-
On a non stick pan, you do not need to grease with oil or butter. On low heat, warm up the pan and grease with oil or butter.
-
Scoop out the batter onto the pan and let it cook slowly. I measure with a cup or a serving spoon to ensure I have even pancakes throughout.
-
Let the top of the pancake begin too bubble and flip. The bubbles on top mean the bottom is set.
-
Cook the rest of the pancakes until the batter is done.
-
Finish off with strawberries and chocolate sauce before serving
-
Enjoy!!
