Work has begun on a rail line that was damaged when a freight train came off the tracks on Monday.
The train, carrying a load of containers through Waipa, near Hamilton, struck a vehicle on Monday afternoon at a rail crossing.
The wagons still attached to the rails have been removed, and KiwiRail says a crane will be in place by midday Tuesday to finish the job.
The derailed locomotive and multiple wagons are still blocking the line, but crews have already started repairing the track.
KiwiRail says it is working to reopen the North Island main trunk line as quickly as possible.
