One person is dead after a fire in London’s east end Sunday night.
Fire crews were called to 238 Tremont Road, a single-family bungalow, near Clarke Road and Trafalgar Street, at about 8:45 p.m. ET.
“We had a 911 call come in from one of the neighbours close to this address, reporting a structure fire with fire and smoke coming from the building,” said London Fire Department platoon Chief Gary Mosburger. There were unconfirmed reports that someone was in the building, he added.
“Our first crew arrived for search, rescue and fire control to try to contain the fire. They knocked the fire down from the exterior and then tried to make entry into the home to perform a search and rescue to try and find somebody. Very early on into those efforts, there was a significant change in fire behaviour which initiated a requirement of an urgent and evacuation by all fire personnel.”
That kind of retreat is standard when fire conditions change dramatically and could pose a threat to crews, Mosburger said.
“We regrouped and then were able to put a pretty good knock on the fire, then make re-entry not too many more minutes after that.”
Once back inside, crews found a female who was taken out. Paramedics tried to revive her, but were unsuccessful. The London police, fire department and Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal are now investigating.
Neighbour Jeanine Mather said she and her husband heard sirens and saw smoke coming out of the house as responders arrived at the scene.
“She was a very quiet, elderly lady. I saw her cat coming and going and understand the neighbour has the cat now,” said Mather. “It’s really sad.”
It’s too early to determine the cause, Mosburger said.
